Wired Magazine
While living in San Francisco, Wired Magazine was a pleasure to read. It still is. It’s the editorial bible for technology, ideas, and innovation. It remains one of the few magazines I enjoy purchasing, than reading online; although, while living in the United Kingdom an issue of Wired became expensive and always was a month behind in distribution.
So without further adieu, Quick.tv welcomes the arrival of Wired Magazine to the United Kingdom. Their premiere issue hits stands April 2nd. It’s going to be interesting how this magazine structures itself in this new economy on the brink of collapse. Distributing a magazine is a capital-intensive business. Yet who better than a magazine of ideas and innovation to figure out a way to fight the odds against it?
The Telegraph has an article interviewing David Rowan, who’ll be taking the helm of Wired Magazine’s rebirth in the United Kingdom. Wired attempted a distribution in the United Kingdom in 1995, baring no fruit for their labor. Frankly he feels the magazine is in a good position with the economy giving prime examples of other successful magazines started during economic downturns. I see a bright future for Wired across the pond. To quote Rowan, “There are tons of these quite important ideas coming out of Britain and we’re tapping into these people slightly ahead of the curve.”

And then they release a statement saying APRIL FOOLS! I don’t know, I just figure they would be better off doing a UK-based magazine style website and using the distro costs for a real magazine to maybe host some events for people in the UK and maybe sponsor some stuff.
Have they been doing a Wired Magazine online thing for the UK for quite awhile already? I would think that would be a prerequisite to ensure they don’t fall flat on their faces again. “OMG ITS 1995 ALL OVER AGAIN — YOU’RE FIRED JOHNNY”

Michael,
Their UK site domain just went live in the recent days. Actually, I think it went live within the last two days. Before that, the landing page simply stated coming soon. What surprises me is that they’ve neglected a blogging network, unlike their San Francisco counterpart.
It can surely been seen that this has been in the works for a while; and, it’s apparently the right time. Hopefully their strategy to grow distribution isn’t a deck of cards. I know in our neck of the woods, Wired Magazine (USA – International distribution) sells off the racks.
