Over the past few weeks we’ve been working with the guys over at Orangepanda to bring our vision of Buck to life, in glorious technicolour.

We’ve had a few requests to blog our creative process for the benefit of other startups looking to create branding for their company at an early stage. So here goes…

Stage 1: The 2D Body As with any character that represents a brand you begin by throwing a bucket load of ideas at the design team. It’s not easy to explain to someone what you’d like, especially when that thing is only a collection of ideas in your grey matter. So instead, give them all of the materials that you used to come up with the concept. This should allow your design team to grow with the same process that you went through in mind mapping your requirements.

Stage 2: The 3D Body Once the design team comes back to you with a general idea of what they think you’re looking for, you move on to the next stage. If you’ve been clear with the information that you provided to them, the first stage should have gone smoothly. It’s often a good idea to have at least two or three face-to-face meetings during the first stage of developing your brand, as this will be the core building block for the rest of the design work.

In our case, we started with the basic principles and aesthetics and then moved onto the characteristics, you can do it any way you like.

Stage 3: Final Product Hopefully, after a few weeks re-drafting you’ll have something that looks like what you had envisioned. There’s nothing like seeing something you’ve imagined come to life on the screen. Don’t be afraid to go back and forth with the designers if you feel what you’re getting isn’t what you thought it would be, it best to find a balance between the design team expertise and your gut feeling.
