Can you recall the online video market before YouTube hit the front pages of New York Times? Most can’t even fathom what it was like before the days of YouTube, but it did exist. The problem of course was online video was simply too bleeding edge for the mainstream market before YouTube’s limelight showed consumers what was possible.

The paradigm shift is beginning to take shape for online video as more people gain access to faster connection speeds. Now in both time spent and number of viewers, online video is growing a rate twice that of television, according to a Neilson study.

YouTube with their first to market advantage in the user-centric ecology of online videos is sidelining this ideology in search of a better way to monetize video content. On April 16th, YouTube’s site redesign will forgo the current navigation scheme in favor of promoting premium content.
The navigation bar currently displays ‘Videos, Channels, Community.’ This will change to ‘Movies, Shows, Music, Videos.’ The first three categories will focus on premium content with Google’s content providers, pushing in-stream advertising. User-generated content will be condensed under ‘Video.’

When I was a postgraduate, I constantly read the success stories of entrepreneurs citing ad nauseam that you have to fail to succeed. I agreed with this in theory, but in practice it was hard to digest. As a postgraduate, if you failed that was your grade. However, now, it’s a different story. Being scared [...]
