  • Highlights of 2008

iPlayerMerry Christmas, well almost. The cold weather is here and festive decorations are slowly getting unpacked in all the major stores. It’s a fact 2008 is nearly over, so what have been the highlights online?

In no particular order, here are a few of mine…

BBC iPlayer and especially the broadcasting of the Olympics online.

I think it’s fair to say online video has arrived. However I find it amazing how many people now take it for granted, and some can’t even survive a few days on holiday without catching up on their favourite soaps!

    Cloud Computing

Is it the future? Microsoft now thinks so, and others are following suit. There has been a real explosion in the popularity of this recently and I’m predicting it will get bigger in ‘09.

    iPhone 3G and the Android

It’s nearly been a year since the first generation iPhone hit the UK (did you queue on launch day? I did) and the 2nd version is now amongst us. The Apple App store is growing in popularity and the Android is now spreading its wings.

    Barrack Obama embracing online technology

Are you friends with Obama on Twitter? From inspiring the YouTube community to share their views, to exclusive announcements via email and text, Obama has clearly become a big fan of social media and it seems to be working. Do you think Gordon Brown will follow suit?

    Ivy Bean

Have you connected with the most mature lady on Facebook? It’s rude to ask a ladies age but apparently she has joined an ‘exclusive club’ which makes her the oldest member on Facebook.

    Live Video Streaming

It’s been around for a while, but now it’s gone mobile and getting rather popular. Have you tried it

    2009

In 2009 I think the popularity of Netbooks will increase signficantly and mobile computing will see a shift in the way sites and applications are designed – less is more.

SaaS will continue to grow and hopefully soon we will start to see the impact of BT’s fibre optic strategy help feed our demand for bandwidth hungry content.
